A 20-year-old first-time mother, was approved for medical evacuation after developing arm prolapse complications during labour in Poiyu Village, Menyamya.
Arm prolapse complication is when the arm of the baby is trapped during labor that increases fatal and maternity risks. The case was classified as childbirth emergency.

According to a report from Jethro Giame, a church leader from Paeka Village, the young mother went into labour on the 6th of November and delivered the baby’s arm at 1:30pm on the 7th of November, prompting an urgent call for assistance from MAMA Foundation.
Weather reports from the area from Jethro confirmed clear skies, and the medevac request was later approved to extract the patient from Poiyu Village to ANGAU Memorial Hospital.
Due to the village’s remote location, it would take an estimated five to six hours to reach Aseki Health Center by road, making air evacuation the most viable option.
The patient was carried to Poiyu Aidpost to be airlifted out into Lae on the 8th of November.
