Young Mother in Ainandoa Village Faces Life-Threatening Postpartum Complications, Medevac Activated | 2nd December 2025

A 23-year-old mother in Ainandoa Village, Menyamya District, is in urgent need of aeromedical evacuation after suffering severe childbirth complications for more than 72 hours.


The medevac request was received with further details confirmed that the patient, gave birth on Friday, 28 November 2025 at 7pm, but experienced a dangerously delayed third stage of labour. The period after childbirth when the placenta should come out.


In this patient's case the placenta failed to deliver, a condition known as retained placenta, which is extremely dangerous because it can cause heavy bleeding and severe infection. For more than three days, the placenta remained inside her womb.

Her condition was classified as a Gynaecology emergency and marked Triage 1, meaning she requires immediate evacuation to prevent organ failure or death.


Weather conditions over the mountains are clear, making it possible for the aircraft to

land at Ainandoa Aidpost, the designated pickup point.


Approval for the medevac was granted and arrangements were underway to transport the patient to higher-level medical care at Lae's ANGAU Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
